Jurgis and Ona, just married and expecting a baby, struggle to start their lives together in Chicago. They get through each hard day with youthful optimism and dream of finding a place where they can live a more fulfilling life. When they learn of a “New Community” of people happily and passionately working together, they are eager to move their family (Jurgis’s mother, Antanas, and brother, Stanislovas) to start anew. But they are soon met again with harsh realities—the work is not satisfying, people are not free to express themselves, and The Real Truth of this place is kept deeply hidden. Antanas and Ona begin to see into the Community’s goal of weeding out perceptive and intelligent people, which puts them in danger. The insight of Jurgis’s family throws him into a violent and heart wrenching ride through loss, defeat, and helplessness. An unbridled anger is born within him as he desperately strives to find a way to fight injustice and restore hope for himself and others in a depleted society.
